What would you do if fire strikes? More importantly what would your children do? Having children is one of the biggest joy’s of life! Keeping your loved ones safe should be a main priority no matter what their age. From our family to yours we’ve curated a list of fire safety tips for your children. Creating awareness through preparation and practice with your loved ones will increase the chances of survival exponentially. Things we strongly recommend are to have a fire extinguisher in the house, installing fire alarms on each storey, creating a fire exit strategy and a step by step plan on how to vacate the premises as quickly and safely as possible.  We would even go the extra step of role playing with them until they showed signs of being knowledgeable on how to exit the home during a fire. The main thing is to stay as calm as possible and to avoid panic at all costs!

Here are some tips to include in your house holds fire exit strategy:

  • Leave all things behind, Never open a warm door, especially if the handle of your door is hot.
  • Exit the premises as quickly as possible and be vocal.

  • If you can’t exit from the door go to the window and make yourself seen. Also shout to try and alert neighbors.
  • One of the most dangerous factors can actually be smoke. If possible keep a wet cloth over your mouth and nose.
  • Block your door with wet cloths or duct tape to stop the smoke from entering.
  • Stay as close to the ground as possible.
  • Have a designated meeting point where everyone is required to meet.
  • Once you make it outside with a cell phone or via a neighbors phone call 911.

*PARENTS PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IT IS NOW REQUIRED BY LAW IN ONTARIO TO HAVE A WORKING SMOKE ALARM ON EVERY STOREY & OUTSIDE OF ALL SLEEPING AREAS!
